Research on communication in harsh environments like space informs ground-based communication studies. Specifically, research into ad hoc networks, which are useful for restoring communication infrastructure during disasters and for monitoring networks during normal times, extends beyond polar communication. Additionally, research into interplanetary internet has led to the development of delay-tolerant networks, which support communication that is intermittent in time and location. These studies began in the late 20th century and remain active today.
